2021 Ford Edge Redesign Expectations, Hybrid

The latest reports are suggesting a complete redesign for the 2021 Ford Edge and that sounds perfectly logical. The current generation has been around since 2014. Just like the corporal sibling, Lincoln Nautilus (former MKX), it received a significant update just recently. Aesthetics have been significant updates, but the fact is that this model still features the same mechanics and rides on a D4 platform. Therefore, we have big expectations from the 2021 Ford Edge. Novelties are expected in all aspects.

The new model should switch to a new, RWD platform and also come with a completely new design. Of course, we count on new aesthetics, as well as on a new, much better cabin layout. Finally, we count on a completely new engine lineup, which would include new EcoBoost units, as well as some form of electrification. The 2021 Ford Edge should come in the second half of the next year.

2021 Ford Edge Redesign

Although mid-size crossovers are primarily seen as family, three-row vehicles, there is still a number of vehicles of this size with just five seats. The Edge is among them. Interestingly, the number of these vehicles is getting bigger, as we’ve recently seen the new Honda Passport. Also, we should consider that the next-generation Grand Cherokee is on its way and that the latest reports are suggesting that the new model will stick to the two-row layout. Of course, there is also Hyundai Santa Fe, while we may expect a couple of new models in the future as well. Therefore, the new 2021 Ford Edge will have to offer more than the current one.

The first thing that comes to mind with this redesign is the platform. Most likely, the new 2021 Ford Edge will ride on a new CD6 platform, just like the new Explorer. Naturally, the biggest change is a new layout, as switching to this architecture means switching to the rear-wheel drive. This should significantly improve the ride quality, along with new engines, though we have to say that the current model already features pretty decent dynamics. Naturally, we count on improvements like better handling, weight reduction etc.

Styling and Interior Design

Naturally, we expect to see new styling as well. Most likely, we won’t see significant changes in size. On the other side, completely new sheet metal is a certain thing. We presume that the 2021 Ford Edge will go in the same direction as the new Explorer, so we may see pretty much the same front end. Of course, we may expect a couple of exclusive details as well. Finally, the performance ST version should come with a couple of upgrades as well.

When it comes to interior design, the current model definitely looks outdated. The infotainment system is old, as well as the whole dashboard design. The dash features lots of plastics and rivals definitely look more upscale. Therefore, expectations from a new model are big. On the other side, the current model is pretty spacious. As we don’t expect bigger changes, the new cabin should be similar as well. One of the things that are really good in the current model is sound insulation. Therefore, we expect that Ford will keep doing a great job in this aspect.

2021 Ford Edge Engine

When it comes to the powertrain, the current model comes with two quite potent engine options. Base models are equipped with a turbo-four, which delivers around 250 horsepower. On the other side, the ST is good for about 335 hp. The new model will come with big upgrades, according to the latest reports. Base models will probably come with a 2.3-liter turbo-four, which is good for about 300 horsepower. On the other side, we expect that the hi-performance ST model will come with a new 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, which delivers full 400 horsepower.

Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid

As we already mentioned, we presume that the new 2021 Ford Edge will come with electrified powertrain as well. The new Explorer comes with two of them. A regular hybrid model is based on a 3.3-liter V6 and delivers a total output of 318 horsepower. On the other side, there is also a plug-in hybrid version, based on a twin-turbo V6, which is good for pretty impressive 450 horsepower. We presume that, at least, one of these two systems could find its place in the new Edge.

When it comes to the price, the current model starts at around 30.000 dollars. We presume that the new model will be slightly more expensive.
