2021 Mazda CX-5 Redesign, Changes, Rumors, Facelift

If we can rely on the latest reports, the current generation of this compact crossover will remain in production for another year or two. Those would be the latest reports that we are getting from reliable sources, which suggest that the Japanese manufacturer won’t rush with the next-generation model. The current generation has been around since 2017 and despite that Mazda usually practices shorter production cycles than most rival companies, we don’t expect to see this overhaul too early. Therefore, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is about to carry on with the same design, with familiar characteristics and features.

Of course, it is always possible to see smaller updates in terms of new colors and standard equipment but anything more than that. The new model year should hit the market in typical time, sometime late in 2020.

When it comes to base design characteristics, we haven’t seen too many changes since the 2017 launch. Moreover, many experts suggest that even that wasn’t a complete overhaul, as many parts remained the same as the original model that debuted in 2012. However, that doesn’t make Mazda feel outdated in any way. Moreover, this is one of the most advanced models in the class, which offers not just an impressive styling, but also feature the best handling and steering in the class. Therefore, we presume that the 2021 Mazda CX-5 will carry on in the same way, without more important changes, except for new colors and standard equipment.

The same thing goes for interior design. This model features one of the nicest cabins in the class. The first thing you’ll notice is that the overall quality is impressive. Premium-grade materials are all over the cabin, while the cabin looks perfectly combine style and simplicity.

As there are no changes, you may count on typical issues as well. This mostly refers to the amount of space on the inside. While the front seats are impressive and offer plenty of room, the second row is a little bit tight, so fitting three adult passengers may be challenging. Also, this model features a small cargo area compared to rivals. You may count on about 31 cubic feet behind the second row and around 60 cubic feet of total cargo space.

Trim Levels

This is the aspect we may see some changes for the next year. We don’t believe that the base trim level organization will change, but there is a big chance that each trim could come with interesting novelties. Still, keep in mind that the current model is already well-equipped, even in the base version.

The base model, called Sport, comes standard with things like LED headlights, push-button ignition, a 7-inch touchscreen, four-speaker sound system etc. Also, keep in mind that Mazda’s i-Activesense package of safety features is standard in every model.

The Touring trim adds a couple of interesting things. For example, you may count on things like keyless entry, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, simulated-leather upholstery, heated front seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 6-speaker audio etc. Additionally, you can get things like a sunroof, premium audio system etc.

The Grand Touring will provide you with leather upholstery, a power-adjustable passenger seat, driver-seat memory functions. Additionally, you can get things like a head-up display, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel.

With the Grand Touring Reserve, all these optional features are standard, while you can also count on a bigger touchscreen. Most importantly, there is a more powerful, turbocharged engine.

Finally, the Signature trim is all about luxury, where you can get things like upgraded leather and similar things. Also, count on surround-view camera and front and rear parking sensors.

2021 Mazda CX-5 Engines

The current model comes with two engines in the offer and we presume the 2021 Mazda CX-5 will continue with both of them. Base models are equipped with a 2.5-liter engine, which delivers 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. This seems okay for a daily ride but drivers who want to use all the potential that this crossover offers should pick a turbocharged version of the engine, which is good for about 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. With premium fuel, a max output goes up to 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque.

Some reports suggest we might see a new SkyActive X engine in the offer, though the officials are still quiet on this matter.
