We can argue about whether body-on-frame SUVs are a dying species or not, but the fact is that the Montero has been out from production for some time and that many enthusiasts feel nostalgic about it. On some other markets of the world, the legendary SUV is still in production, particularly in Japan and some other markets. The upcoming 2020-year model will be the last one in Japan, a final version, which indicates that there won’t be another generation.
On the other side, many reports are suggesting a comeback, considering that Mitsubishi is now a part of Renault-Nissan Alliance and that a new model could be a joint venture of two Japanese carmakers. According to these reports, we could see the new model already in the next year, with a completely new design and tons of novelties. At this point, this is just a rumor, so take the following paragraphs with a dose of the reserve.

Is there a chance to see new Mitsubishi Montero?
Yes, there is. The main reason for such a statement is the fact that Mitsubishi is now a part of the Renault Nissan Alliance. This leads us to the conclusion that the new model would be developed together with Nissan. More precisely, the legendary models, 2020 Mitsubishi Montero and Nissan Patrol, would share the platform and many other parts. The current generation of Nissan’s full-size SUV has also been on the market for almost a decade. So, this would be a perfect opportunity to cut the expenses of developing a new generation. Of course, we would see the next-generation Armada in North America. Despite the fact that the current model has been around since 2016, it is actually the same vehicle as the Patrol, which in terms of the design means the same 10-year old design.
2020 Mitsubishi Montero Redesign
In terms of base design characteristics, the new 2020 Mitsubishi Montero would come with a significant amount of novelties for sure, especially if we consider that the last time we saw a redesign was in 2006. Therefore, we count on a completely new platform, developed with Nissan, as we already mentioned. In terms of the base design, we should see a similar size. That would mean a full-size SUV, which would compete with familiar rivals like the Land Cruiser, Chevy Tahoe, Ford Expedition and other SUVs of this size, but luxurious and mainstream models. Some reports even suggest a stretched wheelbase version. Still, it seems it is still too early to speculate about such details at the moment.

Styling and Interior
We are still far away from exact information about these things. Still, we have no doubt that new aesthetics are what we count on with the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero. Some rough estimation would be that the new model would follow the design language of the brand. This means a lot of similarities with the current Montero Sport and similar models. Still, keep in mind that this is a full-size SUV, so we will probably see a little bit boxier look and a typical wagon body, with a lot of space for passengers and cargo. Of course, we also count on a lot of unique styling details.
On the inside, we expect to see a modern design, full of the latest tech features. Of course, a long list of standard equipment is something we hope for. In terms of the base layout, the new model would come in a typical three-row layout, with capacity for either 7 or 8 passengers, depending on the configuration. Latest safety systems are expected as well.
2020 Mitsubishi Montero Engines
This is a tricky question. Considering that the platform would be shared with Nissan, we presume that the engines would be the same as well. This would probably mean the same 5.6-liter V8, which would, of course, come with lots of updates in order to provide a better economy, more power, and better overall efficiency. Of course, a diesel version is expected as well. Finally, we could easily see a hybrid powertrain, particularly a plug-in hybrid, as Mitsubishi is well-known for making excellent systems.

Release Date
As we already mentioned, the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero is still just a rumor. In some perspective, it could arrive in the near future. Still, the fact is that we are still waiting to hear something from the officials. More details should be known soon.
